The Power of Vulnerability: Quotes from Brene’ Brown (Part 1)

Brene’ Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability is a 6 session presentation that I listened to on Audible. Her work is so impactful that I’m simply sharing the quotes and notes that I took as I listened.

  • Social media can create the shame-based fear of being ordinary.
  • “I think we’re tired of being afraid.”
  • “I work really hard just to wake up in the morning and to say, I am enough.”
  • “Love and belonging are irreducable needs of men, women, and children. In the absence of love and belonging, there is always suffering.”
  • “Shame, blame, disrespect, betrayal, and the witholding of affection damages the roots from which love grows. Love can only survive these injuries if they are acknowleged, healed, and rare.”
  • “True belonging only happens when we present our true and perfect selves to the world. Our sense of belonging can never be greater than our sense of self-acceptance.”
  • “Show up and let yourself be seen.”
  • “How much we know ourselves is extremely important, but how we treat ourselves is the most important.”
  • “Vulnerability is the center of difficult emotion, but it’s also the birthplace of every positive emotion that we need in our lives: love, belonging, joy, and empathy.”
  • “You can’t access empathy if you’re not willing to be vulnerable.”
  • “Shame can only rise to a certain level before people disengage to self-protect.”

Here’s part 2.
